Best Typing Posture
Good typing posture is not just about comfort. It directly affects your speed, accuracy, and long-term health. Sitting incorrectly can lead to wrist pain, shoulder tension, and fatigue that slows you down and increases errors. By setting up your workstation properly, you create the foundation for productive typing sessions.
Chair and Desk Height
Start with your chair. Adjust the height so your feet rest flat on the floor with your knees at a 90-degree angle. Your hips should be slightly higher than your knees. The desk should be at elbow height when your arms hang naturally at your sides. If your desk is too high, raise your chair and use a footrest. If it is too low, raise your monitor and keyboard.
Keyboard and Mouse Position
Place your keyboard directly in front of you with a gap of four to six inches from the edge of the desk. Your wrists should be straight, not bent up or down. The keyboard should be flat or slightly tilted away from you. Your mouse should sit next to the keyboard at the same height. Avoid reaching forward or to the side for extended periods.
Monitor Placement
The top of your monitor screen should be at or slightly below eye level. Position the screen about an arm's length away. If you wear bifocals, lower the monitor slightly so you can view it comfortably. Proper monitor placement prevents neck strain and reduces the urge to lean forward, which can throw off your whole posture.
Arm and Wrist Position
Your upper arms should hang loosely from your shoulders with elbows at about 90 degrees. Your forearms should be parallel to the floor. Keep your wrists straight and relaxed. Do not rest your wrists on the desk edge or a wrist rest while typing. Your hands should float above the keys, moving freely from the home row.
Taking Breaks
Even perfect posture cannot prevent fatigue during long typing sessions. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Stand up, stretch your arms, roll your shoulders, and shake out your hands. Short breaks improve circulation, reduce tension, and help you maintain focus.
